$1.9 million. That’s how much has been spent so far in the race to replace Rep. Steve Israel in the 3rd Congressional District.

In this episode, we look at campaign finance in the Democratic primary: How much money have the candidates raised? Why do donors make contributions? Is there a better way to fund elections?

"Open Seat" is a serial documentary produced by Sam Guzik for the editorial board.

We’ll be following developments in the 3rd Congressional District and posting regular video updates. This is the second chapter in the series. We’ll be posting additional episodes through election day and until January, when a new representative is sworn in.
