The search is on for a man who fired a gun while holding up a Pearl River drugstore early Monday and fled with cash and smokes, police said.

At 4:38 a.m. Monday, a man walked into the CVS pharmacy at 75 N. Middletown Rd. carrying a handgun and announced he was robbing the 24-hour store, Orangetown police Det. Lt. Jim Brown said in a statement.

The man told CVS employees to take him to the safe, police said. When they told him they couldn't open it, he fired at least one round into the ceiling.

Staff then gave him cigarettes and an undetermined amount of cash from the registers, police said. He then ran from the store in an unknown direction, police said.

The suspect is described as a male, 5-feet-10 and about 190 pounds, and dressed entirely in black.

Rockland County Sheriff's Department detectives assisted at the scene. A call to Orangetown police Monday afternoon was not immediately returned.

Anyone who saw the robbery or has other information about it is asked to call Orangetown police detectives at 845-359-2121.
