Phillies end Cardinals' winning streak at eight

Placido Polanco led off the 11th inning with a home run and the Phillies survived another poor offensive showing yesterday, beating the Cardinals, 2-0, in St. Louis to avert a four-game sweep and snap the Cardinals' winning streak at eight games. The Phillies won for the second time in eight games since the All-Star break.

Cole Hamels allowed one hit in eight innings, and four relievers did not allow a hit in the final three innings. Adam Wainwright missed a chance to match Colorado's Ubaldo Jimenez as the majors' lone 15-game winners, striking out six in six scoreless innings. Wainwright has worked 25 consecutive scoreless innings in his last four starts and lowered his ERA to 1.94.

Braves 8, Padres 0

Tim Hudson (10-5) threw seven scoreless innings to improve to 5-0 vs. the Padres and Alex Gonzalez capped his first homestand in Atlanta with four hits. He had hits in his first four at-bats to give him hits in six straight at-bats over two games, four shy of a team record.

Marlins 3, Rockies 2

Ronny Paulino hit a walk-off single with the bases loaded in the ninth for host Florida. Josh Johnson struck out 11 in 6 1/3 innings and allowed one run in the no-decision. His 1.61 ERA is best in the majors. He has not allowed more than two runs in his past 13 starts.

Nationals 7, Reds 1

Livan Hernandez (7-6) allowed seven hits in his second complete game of the season and Adam Dunn homered to lift visiting Washington.

Twins 5, Orioles 0

Carl Pavano pitched a five-hitter to earn his career-high seventh straight victory for visiting Minnesota. Pavano (12-6) struck out four in his fifth complete game of the season and 12th of his career. The ex-Yankee is 7-0 in nine starts since June 3.

Tigers 5, Blue Jays 2

Miguel Cabrera started a three-run eighth inning with an RBI double and Justin Verlander (12-5) went eight innings for host Detroit. - AP
