Researchers: Nassau's bays in critical condition

Officials say improvements need to be made to the Bay Park sewage treatment plant.

MINEOLA - Nassau County's bays were already in critical condition before Sandy made them worse, researchers say.

Researchers released their findings to environmentalists today during a bi-annual meeting in Farmingdale. Officials say the only way to improve the health of the bays is to make major and expensive upgrades to the Bay Park sewage treatment plant. The plant was damaged during Sandy and has yet to be repaired. The plant handles about 40 percent of Nassau's sewage.

The studies on the bays are expected to be completed later this year, and the group will be making recommendations.
