I am usually very patient with my fantasy teams. When I draft players, I usually have a lot of faith in them and stick with them. As Wandy Rodriguez got hammered start after start last season in the first half, I was hesitant to hit the drop button. Then I got sick of enduring his ulcer-inducing lines and cut bait.
Obviously, it turned out to be a bad move. Before the All-Star break, he had a 4.97 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and a 77/40 K/BB ratio in 101 1/3 innings. After the break, he went 5-1 in 14 starts and had a 101/28 K/BB ratio in 93 2/3 innings with a 2.11 ERA and 1.04 WHIP.
Rodriguez had a K/9 over 8.0 for the third consecutive season and despite the awful control in the first half, he had a 3.14 BB/9 for the season. He has a 3.60 ERA or less in three consecutive seasons and increased his groundball rate to 48 percent last season. Rodriguez is a bargain in early drafts so far. The atrocious first half might still be on the mind of many, but look at the last three seasons and he's consistently good.
