Andruw Jones never had a chance.
And he knew it almost immediately.
The leftfielder found himself in self-protection mode in the sixth inning Thursday when Josh Hamilton’s fly ball to left-center disappeared into the sun.
“It’s one of those things, sometimes the ball is hit perfectly in the sun and there’s nothing you can do,” Jones said.
Jones covered up at the last moment as the ball fell to the grass. “I know it was hit pretty hard,” he joked. “I was happy it didn’t hit me in the head.”
Hamilton’s double led to two Texas runs that gave the Rangers a 4-0 lead. Jones keyed a comeback in the five-run bottom half of the inning, smoking a two-run homer down the leftfield line that tied it at 4. Rangers manager Ron Washington asked for a review and the umpires didn’t look at it long.
“I knew it was fair,” Jones said. “I watched it all the way.”
