"Mets Essential," by Matthew Silverman, is an extremely well-written history of the Mets through the 2006 season. In going through the franchise's first 45 years, Silverman displays both a deft touch and a love for the team.
So very much has occurred in the past five years, of course, so the only criticism of this book - not its fault - is that it's incomplete. But if you're a Mets fan, then this is very much worth your while. You'll laugh at some of the old follies and revel in the high points.
And I'll give my copy of the book to the first person who e-mails me - at email@example.com - with the correct answer to this question:
Jose Reyes (735) and David Wright (699) currently rank first and second, respectively, for all-time runs scored by a Met. When this book was published after '06, that was not the case. The leader at that juncture is now third all-time, with 662 runs scored in a Mets uniform.
Name this mystery Met.
Here are the contest rules.
--UPDATE, 3:47 p.m.: We have a winner! Our old pal bigfroe knew that Darryl Strawberry ranks third, and used to rank first, on the Mets' all-time list for runs scored.
