Willie Mays is in Derek Jeter's rear-view mirror.

Jeter's infield single in the fifth inning of Friday's game against the Rays gave him 3,284 career hits and sole possession of 10th place on the all-time list.

But the celebration was tempered by a 6-4 loss to the Rays, which puts the Yankees in jeopardy of falling out of a first-place tie with the Orioles. Baltimore is playing the Athletics in Oakland.

Jeter's milestone hit came off Tampa Bay starter David Price, against whom Jeter has 16 hits since September 2008. Price was also victimized for Jeter's 3,000th hit on July 9, 2011. Check out all of Jeter's damage off Price in our database.

With Eduardo Nunez on first base—and drawing plenty of attention from Price—Jeter knocked a 1-2 fastball just past Elliot Johnson's glove at second base. The ball trickled into short centerfield and Jeter was safe at first.

Jeter wasn't alone in making history. Alex Rodriguez's two-run home run in the eighth inning--with Jeter on base--cut the Rays lead to 5-4 and gave Rodriguez sole possession of ninth place on the all-time runs scored list with 1,889. Rodriguez had been tied with Lou Gehrig.
