Eric Chavez, swinging the hottest bat on the team with 14 hits in his last 23 at-bats, did not start, though he pinch hit for Casey McGehee in the eighth and struck out looking. Chavez, 34, has been dealing with a sore back.
“You worry about the physical aspect of it,” Girardi said of getting Chavez his rest.
