It will be a surprise if Derek Jeter rejoins the Yankees by the end of the weekend series that starts Friday night in Boston.
No one will be more surprised than Joe Girardi.
“I wouldn’t think so," the Yankees manager said Thursday. "We’ll go day by day and see where he’s at.”
Jeter looked fine as he took batting and infield practice at Yankee Stadium before the afternoon game, but the manager said that his captain must clear other “hurdles,” particularly running the bases.
“I don’t sense that we’re being over-cautious," Girardi said. "I think we’re just taking it day by day to see how he does. I’m a guy who never puts a date on when a guy is coming back. That’s just who I am. That way, if he’s not quite ready, all these red flags don’t go up and I don’t have to answer the questions. My patent answer is, when he’s ready he’ll be here."
