BALTIMORE — Ivan Nova said he’s ready for “whatever,’’ and in the short term, that means the bullpen. But that’s likely only for the very short term.
“We’ve always considered him a rotation guy,’’ Joe Girardi said of Nova, activated from the disabled list before last night’s game. “He’s not a guy that’s really pitched out of the bullpen a lot.’’
There had been discussion that Nova might bump Freddy Garcia from today’s start, but the Yankees ultimately decided to stay in rotation, at least for now. Girardi did not rule out having Nova step in for Garcia or David Phelps their next time through the rotation. “I don’t know. We’re not that far ahead,’’ he said.
Nova, 1-4 with a 7.28 ERA in eight starts after the All-Star break before going on the disabled list Aug. 23 with inflammation in his right rotator cuff, is eager to return in any capacity.
“I want to be there helping out the team in any way possible,’’ he said. “No matter if it’s as a starter or in the bullpen, I just want to be there helping this team win. I just want to pitch. I’ll do whatever asks me to do.’’
