41° Good Morning

Jason Bay, Pedro Feliciano, Russell Martin and Grete Waitz

Very quiet night in New York baseball, with both teams off. Besides, everyone's paying more attention to the Knicks at the moment, anyway.

One adjustment for later in the week, when I'll be fully back to work: We'll have a giveaway contest tomorrow, but not on Thursday.

--Jason Bay should return to the Mets on Thursday, but given how Bay's Mets stay has gone, let's make sure he gets through the next couple of days all right. It's hard to believe that, two offseasons ago, he was regarded as one of the top free agents.

--Pedro Feliciano will postpone surgery for now, after meeting yesterday with James Andrews. The path of rest and rehabilitation appears to be a longshot, but it doesn't carry much of a risk because, if Feliciano does ultimately need surgery, it's a serious enough procedure that it would sideline him for the rest of the year whether he does it now or in six weeks.

--Russell Martin has been a huge acquisition by the Yankees so far.

--An odd story: Reds pitcher Mike Leake was arrested by Cincinnati police and accused of shoplifting six shirts that were priced at a total of $59.99. I look forward to learning more about this situation.

--Remember when the Orioles were good? Reality has struck. They're now just a game up on the last-place Red Sox, who are on a roll.

--Not a baseball person, obviously, but rest in peace, Grete Waitz. I covered the New York City Marathon early in my sportswriting career, in the mid '90s, and I met Ms. Waitz a few times. She couldn't have been more endearing. She was only 57. So sad.

--Have a great day.
