The Mets have demoted Kirk Nieuwenhuis to Triple-A and called up outfield prospect Juan Lagares, the team announced Tuesday afternoon.
Nieuwenhuis struggled in limited at bats this season, hitting .125. Lagares, 24, hit .346 with three homers at Triple-A Las Vegas. He’s not in the lineup Tuesday night as the Mets take on the Dodgers at Citi Field.
Lagares can play all three outfield spots.
The 2013 Minor League Baseball Analyst pegs Lagares as a backup left fielder and gives him a 70% probability of becoming a platoon player in the majors. Here’s the full write-up:
“Athletic OF makes hard contact and drives the ball into the gaps. Has above-average speed and the ability to hit for average despite marginal strike zone judgment. Has nice athleticism and did steal 21 bags, but his below-average power and struggles with pitch recognition make him more of a 4th OF type.”
