R.A. Dickey is a legitimate Cy Young candidate. He's got four more starts to reach the 20-win mark. And now he's about to have his own day. Or at least his pitch is.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg will proclaim Sept. 20 “Knuckleball Day” in New York as part of a promotion for a film -- which features Dickey -- about the ornery pitch. (Boston Mayor Thomas Menino is going with Sept. 18.)
“We are very excited that Mayors Menino and Bloomberg have chosen to honor our film in such a unique way, and are looking forward to having thousands see the story of these men and their unique skill like they have never seen it before,” filmakers Annie Sundberg and Ricki Stern said in a release. “Their story of success and overcoming great odds is something anyone can relate to, and we are proud to be able to bring it to the screen.”
IFC Film Center in Manhattan will host public screenings and a Q&A on the 20th, with Dickey, Tim Wakefield and Joe Niekro scheduled to attend. IFC Film Center will continue showings this month (see full schedule).
