4,170: Mike Mussina's salary as the new head coach of the varsity basketball team at his alma mater, Montoursville Area High. Mussina wrapped his H.S. hoops career with 1,382 points and then went on to earn $140 million in the majors.

1,297: Number of home runs Japan’s NPB teams are on pace to hit this season, well above last year's total of 881. The shocking frequency has commissioner Ryozo Kato under fire after admitting he slipped in livelier baseballs to the Japanese League without any prior announcement.

500: Distance (in miles) of Tropicana Field from Sugar Hill, Ga., where Royals manager Ned Yost watched his team play the Rays from the front pew of his daughter Jenny's wedding. Yost turned over managerial duties to bench coach Chico Cudahia, but was still there in spirit. "I had the phone out during the whole process," Yost said.

110: Extra-inning games in the majors this season, including a 20-inning loss by the Mets last Saturday at Citi Field and a 19-inning defeat by the Yankees in Oakland on Thursday. There already has been 14 games of 14 or more innings, tying the most of any season since 1920.

17: Consecutive wins by Mississippi State after coach John Cohen lifted his 22-year ban on facial hair, a decision swayed by a player's power-point presentation that showed all the baseball greats who had beards or mustaches. The Bulldogs are now in Omaha playing in the College World Series.
