Mets mini-camp: Oliver Perez

I made fun of Ollie Perez earlier today on Twitter, noting that, while Johan Santana looked lean and mean...Ollie grew a beard.

But for whatever it's worth, Perez, if not quite svelte, looked fine playing catch today. Like Santana, he'll throw off a mound tomorrow.

Perez said he has spent the bulk of the offseason in Phoenix, working out with renowned trainer Brett Fischer. Fellow ballplayers like Kerry Wood and brothers Chris and Shelley Duncan were there, too.

"I’m real happy with the way I feel right now," Perez said. "I’m excited to see my friends, get ready for spring training."

We never know when we'll see Good Ollie or Bad Ollie, but there's little disputing that the World Baseball Classic played a significant role in messing up Perez last year. As it likely did for J.J. Putz, too. Just sayin.'

Perez explained that, while with Team Mexico, the club operated more as a big-league club would during the regular season. There were fewer drills and exercises and more of a focus on the actual games, because the games were deemed important.

This, of course, is why so many teams hate the WBC.

Well, that's all I've got from the mini-camp today. Thanks to photographer Ken Davidoff for the photos.

(Cut me some slack. They're my first photos for this blog.)
