The Mets placed outfielder Jason Bay on the 15-day disabled list with a nondisplaced fractured rib on the left side.
The Mets will fill the open roster spot with infielder Zach Lutz from Triple-A Buffalo, who is batting .333 with three home runs and 10 RBI in 19 games.
Bay was hurt in the second game of yesterday's doubleheader against the San Francisco Giants. In the fourth inning, Bay ran back on a long fly ball that bounced out of his glove for a two-run double. Bay landed face-first near the warning track and was taken out of the game a few innings later as the Mets were swept by the Giants.
Bay is batting .240 with three homers and five RBI in 15 games. This is the third time Bay has landed on the DL since joining the Mets in 2010. He began the 2011 season on the DL with an intercostal strain on the left side of his rib cage. In 2010, Bay only appeared in 96 games after he suffered a concussion.
