The Mets couldn’t wait for Ronny Cedeño’s strained left calf any longer.
Even with a day off Thursday, they decided just before Wednesday night’s game against the Phillies to place the infielder on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to Sunday) and recall Jordany Valdespin.
Cedeño, who was filling in for Ruben Tejada at shortstop, has been out since Saturday. The Mets initially thought the injury was just a cramp, but it got worse instead of better.
Manager Terry Collins watched Cedeño work out on the field before the game. Asked how he looked, Collins said, “OK. Not great. OK. I’m not sure OK’s going to play.”
Cedeno is batting .231 in 25 games. Valdespin was 2-for-20 in 15 games during two earlier stints with the Mets.
Omar Quintanilla started at shortstop for the second straight night. He went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs in his Mets’ debut on Tuesday, but was 0-for-4 Wednesday night.
