Great angle for today's Fernando Martinez story by my colleague Jim Baumbach, who spoke to Moises Alou about the Mets' top outfield prospect. Alou, who was the GM of F-Mart's winter league team, suggested that Martinez has to make the mental jump to finally become a star in the majors. Martinez is showing this spring that he definitely has the physical tools. Staying healthy would help, too. Like Alou, Martinez's Mets career repeatedly has been derailed by injuries, so maybe what he's doing now could be done on a more regular basis by simply remaining on the field.
Also, there were more interesting comments by Mike Pelfrey, who has been one of the more outspoken Mets about the team's chances this season. Pelfrey talked again about sneaking up on other clubs, and coming off the crushing disappointment of las year, maybe it's a good spot for the Mets as they enter 2010. Of course, Pelfrey - along with Oliver Perez and John Maine -- will have a lot to do with that prediction coming true, so it's in their hands.
And lastly, the Mets play one of only two night games this spring when they travel to Jupiter today for a 7:10 matchup with the Marlins. Yes ... The Marlins ... Again. The other "night game" is a 6:10 start against the Rays at Tropicana Field on April 2.
Tonight, Oliver Perez gets the start, followed by Hisanori Takahashi, Ryota Igarashi and Francisco Rodriguez.
