Cliff Floyd says Mets should trade Jose Reyes

Cliff Floyd, as a former teammate of Jose Reyes, knows a little bit about how things work in Flushing. Floyd also was one of the more outspoken players during his days with the Mets, and he had this to say Thursday about the free-agent shortstop's situation when asked on SiriusXM's Mad Dog Radio Channel:

Host/Bruce Murray: “You’ve been a part of that organization. They’re in a different situation today than they were even a couple of years ago because of the Bernie Madoff thing and how much money they can spend on salaries. A player of that caliber, relatively young, shortstop, you can build a team around him or you can say we can’t afford him and trade him. How do you handle that situation in your mind?”

Cliff Floyd: “Well, if I’m the Mets, I trade Jose Reyes and I start looking for seekers immediately because I know I probably can’t sign this guy to what he wants. The team has been through a lot. Fred Wilpon, who I think highly of, made some comments, and I think critical comments, to a young star who’s been through a lot with the organization in terms of injuries. To hear him say the things he said about Jose which, you know, you can’t knock a person’s opinion but I think as Jose was having the year he is having you would not want one of your star players to hear that type of comment. But things are said and listen, who are we to question Fred Wilpon on his comments?

"But I think at the end of the day the Mets will probably have to part ways with Jose and give him an opportunity to get a fresh start and move on in a different direction. I think for Jose, he has to continue to just stay healthy and I think if he stays healthy the sky is the limit. I’ve seen in the past, I’ve seen him have this type of year where he has what, 13, 14 triples thus far? The park is perfect for Jose Reyes, not probably perfect for the other stars they have in Jason Bay and David Wright. I think Jose needs to go to a park like Citi Field, a park like (AT&T) Park in San Francisco, a big triples alley in right center is perfect for him.”
