The Mets' first day of full-squad workouts went off without a hitch, despite a near-collision between Fred Wilpon's golf cart and shortstop Jose Reyes. Wilpon's cart is everywhere, with team president Saul Katz riding shotgun, and with so many players in camp, sometimes there's not much room to maneuver. Maybe it's time for stop signs between fields?
This morning we go inside the DD Stadium conference room for some details from Terry Collins' opening speech. R.A. Dickey said the key to the whole address was not so much what Collins said, but that the players trust him. If that's the case, it's a credit to Collins for establishing that bond so quickly. We'll see if it makes a difference.
Also, David Wright said that he hadn't been told directly about the new guidelines for playing cards in the clubhouse, but Collins anticipates a cut-off time on such activities, evidently to focus solely on baseball before the first pitch. No word on what that time will be, however.
Collins added that Carlos Beltran will be held out of the first week of exhibition games - "to err on the side of caution" -- and Perez, evidently still sharp from a winter in the Mexican League, impressed during his live BP session.
