Daniel Murphy is on a hot streak

Perhaps, Daniel Murphy's move back to the second spot in the lineup simply brought him more comfort. Maybe, he's getting better pitches to hit because David Wright also has caught fire.

Whatever the explanation, the Mets continue to get elite production out of Murphy, who blasted a three-run homer Tuesday night in a 12-7 blowout of the Yankees.

"He's gotten hot, and when he gets hot, he is a good hitter," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "He's got power, he'll hit to all fields."

Among National League second basemen, few have been more dangerous. He's hitting .320 with three homers and 12 doubles, which ranks second to the Phillies' Chase Utley. He trails only Utley with a .840 on-base plus slugging.

"I'm seeing the ball pretty well, not trying to do too much," said Murphy, who went 1-for-3 with a walk, two runs and four RBIs. "And I don't think it's an accident that I get more pitches to hit with as well as David's swinging the bat."

After a few games as the cleanup hitter, Collins moved Murphy back into the two spot, where he has remained since April 29. Since then, Murphy is hitting .411.

Puello returns

Minor league outfielder Cesar Puello was placed on the temporary inactive list last week, when he traveled to Miami to participate in a hearing related to Biogenesis, a source confirmed Tuesday.

The source said that Puello was not the focus of the inquiry. He has since returned.

Puello served a 50-game ban last season for his involvement in the Biogenesis scandal.

Shutting the door

The Mets officially do not have a closer, with Collins indicating he will handle save situations on a game-by-game basis. But he hopes to fill the role soon, with Jenrry Mejia emerging as a possibility.

"In a little while," Collins said, "you've got to find your guy."
