It's Mets pitching vs. Dodgers hitting

The theory that good pitching beats good hitting will get a test in the Mets' series against the Dodgers, starting with today's doubleheader. The Dodgers come in tied for the MLB lead in hitting with a .293 team average. They're tied with the Al's Kansas City Royals, and both teams currently are last in their divisions, which doesn't say much for their pitching at this early stage.

Rightfielder Andre Ethier (.356, 5 HR, 16 RBI, .424 OBP, .627 SP) and centerfielder Matt Kemp (.316, 7 HR, 20 RBI, 20 runs, .645 SP) are absolutely tearing the cover off the ball. The question is whether Mets pitching can slow them down. Mets starters have a 1.28 ERA over the past 11 games, covering 63.1 IP. The starters are 4-1 in that span, and the team is 8-3, including a season-high four-game winning streak.

Mets cleanup hitter Jason Bay is hitting .381 (8-21) in his past seven games, but David Wright (.167 in his past 12 games) and Jeff Francoeur (.114 in his past nine games) have gone cold…Wright needs three hits to become the eighth player in Mets history with 1,000 hits for the franchise…Dodgers reliver Hong-Chih Kuo is kryptonite to the Mets with a 0.35 ERA spanning 26.0 IP against them…The last Mets-Dodgers doubleheader was played on 8/21/97, which shows how rare they have become…Elias Sports Bureau comes up with a lot of weird stuff, but stats geeks might be interested to know the Mets just became the first team in MLB history to face four straight managers with at least 1,500 wins, including St. Louis' Tony LaRussa, Chicago's Lou Piniella, Atlanta's Bobby Cox and now the Dodgers' Joe Torre…Tonight marks the beginning of Delta Water Taxi service to Mets games. It leaves Pier 11 near Wall Street 90 minutes before game time and arrives at the World's Fair Marina a short walk from Citi Field. The first departure is tonight at 5:40 before the second game of the doubleheader.
