WFAN’s Ed Coleman reported yesterday that Jason Bay has started running and is expected back at some point in September.
While it is good to get Bay back out on the field, the Mets season looks over. In fact Bay’s return could be negative with respect to Fernando Martinez. It’s questionable whether taking away at-bats from the young outfielder will be detrimental to his development.
If the Mets are out of contention when Bay is ready to return, the better move might be to just let him rest.
The Mets are a season-high 11 games behind the first-place Atlanta Braves in the National League East. In a no-win situation in the wild-card race with co-leaders San Francisco and Philadelphia squaring off, the Mets fell to 8½ games behind the Phillies, who defeated the Giants yesterday.
