Key start for Takahashi

You will recall Jerry Manuel dismissing John Maine from the conversation when it came to discussing Hisanori Takahashi’s status as a starting pitcher. Fans often get caught up in the moment of a good performance and sometimes the talent evaluators do the same.

This is certainly not a vote for Maine, who remains injured and probably has had it as a Met, but neither is it ringing endorsement for Takahashi. Too many people see him in the bullpen. So, Manuel’s pronouncement that he stays in the rotation remains suspect. It will become more so as trade talks intensify over the next few weeks.

The back end of the rotation gets another try tonight when Takahashi (6-3, 3.78) starts against the Marlins and Nate Robertson (5-6, 4.89) in San Juan. Takahashi is coming off a bad start against the Tigers. He allowed six runs in four innings.

Every time we try to count him out, Takahashi seems to come back strong, but realize that he did allow five runs in 5 1/3 innings to the Marlins earlier this season. Robertson has faced the Mets four times and is 2-1. He was tagged for six runs in 4 2/3 innings at Citi Field on June 5.
