`Liar' remark evokes Billy Martin

Mets’ pitching coach Dan Warthen referring to pitcher John Maine as a ``habitual liar’’ after Thursday's five pitch start in Washington instantly becomes the second most famous reference of its sort in New York baseball history.

The long reigning line for the ages came from manager Billy Martin in 1978 when he said the following about Reggie Jackson and owner George Steinbrenner: ``The two were meant for each other. One's [Jackson] a born liar, and the other's convicted." It led to Martin's first ouster as manager.
