JUPITER, Fla. — Lucas Duda resumed swinging a bat on Wednesday, moving one step closer to making his Grapefruit League debut after being slowed by issues in his back and hips.
The Mets first baseman had already resumed working in the field before adding some hitting back into his routine. He went through what he called a normal day.
“I took a little bit of time because we were afforded that luxury, so I’ll get back at it today and see how it feels,” said Duda, who had a cortisone shot in his hips on Friday.
Duda missed much of last season with a stress fracture in his back. He called his latest setback the result of “spasms.” Though he has resumed regular activity, Duda backed off establishing a firm date on his return.
“I’m not sure,” he said. “I don’t want say two or three days and end up being four or five. So, we’ll take it day by day.”
Zack Wheeler inched closer to making his Grapefruit League debut. The righthander threw his first live batting practice session of spring training. He may pitch one more batting practice before progressing to game action.
“It’s just another step closer,” said Wheeler, who has worked without issue since a bout with soreness in his surgically repaired right elbow earlier in camp.
The Mets have been eyeing March 8 or 10 for Wheeler’s first game, though those plans are tentative.
“Stuff’s always changing,” he said. “I’m not setting a date or anything.”
Wheeler threw about 25 pitches during his session, though there remains some fine-tuning to be done with his curveball.
“I’m happy with where I’m at,” said Wheeler, who is hoping to pitch in the big leagues for the first time since 2014.
Back in the swing
A left shoulder injury kept righthander Robert Gsellman from swinging the bat during this time with the Mets. But Gsellman was cleared on Wednesday to take dry swings for the first time since offseason surgery to correct the issue.
