John Maine performed as well as could be expected in today's rehab start for Double-A Binghamton at Trenton. He allowed one hit over four scoreless innings and struck out five with two walks. Maine threw 63 pitches, 36 for strikes, but the Mets did not provide any gun readings from his outing.
Maine has been on the disabled list since May 21 with right shoulder weakness and the Mets anticipate him needing another two rehab starts before he will be activated. Jerry Manuel said Friday that he would like to see Maine throwing 91-92 mph before re-installing him in the rotation, but that seems to be an unrealistic number. Don't be surprised if Maine returns in a bullpen role first before getting a shot to start again.
