Manager Jerry Manuel is auditioning closers with K-Rod out for the season after suffering a torn thumb ligament resulting from the alleged assault of his fiancée’s father last week.
The Mets scored two runs off Houston closer Matt Lindstrom in the ninth inning to go ahead 3-1 over the Astros last night.
Hisanori Takahashi pitched a perfect ninth to earn his first Major League save and seal the victory.
Takahashi pitched a clean ninth, but Bobby Parnell began warming up in the bullpen after the first out of the inning, indicating Takahashi has not secured the closer’s role.
Since getting moved out of the rotation and to the bullpen, Takahashi has allowed two runs in seven innings.
"Before the game, we had a little meeting with Warthen, and he told me that somebody will take responsibility for the ninth," Takahashi said after the game through his interpreter. "So in this game, it was me. Maybe tomorrow, maybe not."
