The Mets, concerned about their catching depth, on Thursday signed veteran Rob Johnson to a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Johnson, 28, spent 2011 with the San Diego Padres, batting .190 with three home runs and 16 RBI in 67 games.

He will compete with Mike Nickeas to back up Josh Thole. The Mets non-tendered Ronny Paulino earlier this month.

Johnson has also appeared in the majors with Seattle. He is a career .197 hitter.
