Mets farmhand Brandon Welch, currently on the roster of the Class A Brooklyn Cyclones, has received a 50-game suspension for a second positive test for a drug of abuse, the commissioner's office announced Friday.

Welch, a 23-year-old righthander, was 2-2 with a 5.18 ERA in 14 appearances, including three starts, for the Cyclones last season. He struck out 21 and walked 12 in 33 innings.

Welch is the second player from the Mets' organization to be suspended this offseason for a drug of abuse (those not related to performance enhancement). L.J. Mazzilli -- the son of former Met and Yankee Lee Mazzilli -- received a 50-game suspension in December. Soon after, Mazzilli announced his plans to seek counseling for the issue.
