Jason Bay was a tad awkward, Jeff Francoeur was his typically easy-going self and Jose Reyes -- to the surprise of no one -- hammed it up for the cameras.
Prior to Tuesday's game being cancelled, the three Mets unveiled their own Players Choice Signature Series jerseys, T-shirts and baseball caps at Citi Field. Johan Santana and Carlos Beltran also designed apparel, but did not attend the press conference.
Bay tapped into his love of hockey for inspiration, choosing a traditional v-neck pullover style for his baseball jersey. But his hockey theme almost got him in trouble with Hockey Canada. He was forced to edit his design in the late stages because of a potential logo infringement.
"I was crossing some boundaries," said the Canadian left fielder, who had a red maple leaf next to an image of his likeness on the back of his jersey.
Francoeur stayed true to his southern roots by designing a trucker hat with a Mr. Met logo and decorating his old school pinstripe jersey with Clemson Tiger paws. (He had initially signed a letter of intent to attend the university.)
And Reyes, a music enthusiast, incorporated a pair of microphones on the front of his T-shirt and the phrase, "La Melaza" on the back of his jersey. "That's what everyone calls me -- something sweet. Like honey," the shortstop said playfully.
The Mets Players Choice Signature Series items were to go on sale for the first time at Citi Field during Tuesday's game against the Padres. The merchandise is also available here on mlb.com and at metro-area Modell’s.
Working with the MLB Players Association, the players began designing their apparel in spring training. The process was completed in two months.
All three, however, agreed that Santana's apparel -- which featured an elaborate design of a No. 5 and 7 subway train colliding -- was the best. But Francoeur and Bay said Reyes' designs would be the most popular with fans.
The Mets are just one of four teams participating in the series. The Yankees (Joba Chamberlain, Andy Pettitte, Curtis Granderson, Nick Swisher and Mark Teixeira) unveiled their designs on June 2 and the Phillies (Cole Hamels, Raul Ibanez, Jimmy Rollins, Shane Victorino and Jayson Werth) on June 4. The Twins (J.J. Hardy, Justin Morneau, Joe Nathan, Nick Punto, and Kevin Slowey) will unveil their personalized apparel on Thursday June 10.
But there's no mistaking who is the best design team, said Francoeur.
"I'm pretty sure we're probably going to design a whole lot better than they will," he said with a smile.
