CHICAGO — Noah Syndergaard played catch on Wednesday, putting him on track to throw a bullpen session in the next few days. It’s a needed step for Syndergaard to remain on pace to pitch in a game before the season ends.

“If he comes out of this fine, he’s going to throw a ’pen,” manager Terry Collins said.

Soreness prevented Syndergaard from throwing in a simulated game on Sunday, a setback in his attempt to pitch in a big league game for the first time since tearing his lat muscle in April.

With the minor-league season wrapped up, bullpen sessions and simulated games will be Syndergaard’s only options to prepare for a return. But the Mets still believe that the righthander will make it back, even if it means abbreviated outings as part of a tandem, or even coming out of the bullpen to begin clean innings in relief.

Braves hire Mets exec

The Braves officially announced the hiring of longtime Mets executive Adam Fisher as assistant general manager.

Fisher, 39, began his career with the Mets in 2003 and worked under four general managers. He had been the longest-tenured member of the Mets front office.

A Harvard graduate, Fisher had risen to senior director of baseball operations, working closely with assistant general manager John Ricco.

Extra bases

Reliever Erik Goeddel has been prescribed medication to treat the dizziness and blurred vision that had plagued him for several days before an exam on Tuesday. Goeddel began limited baseball activity on Tuesday, according to a team release . . . Infielder T.J. Rivera will undergo Tommy John surgery in Florida on Thursday to repair a torn ligament in his right elbow. Positions players typically require a six-month recovery, which means Rivera could be ready by mid-March.
