Terry Collins already has his so-called “Big Ox” in Lucas Duda, but when rosters expand next month, the manager may have to come up with a similar nickname for Val Pascucci, should he get the call.
Pascucci, at 6-6, is another large target at first base, and would bring some added pop as well. Pascucci has 17 home runs in 105 games at Triple-A Buffalo, but at age 32, he doesn’t really fit the label of “prospect.”
Nick Evans has filled the role of righthanded bat off the bench, creating less of a need for Pascucci, so he’s more of a September call-up. Despite 114 strikeouts, he still has a .384 on-base percentage, and oddly does better against righthanded pitchers: a .285 average compared with .240 against lefties. That certainly could help him find a niche at the next level.
