Remember when Mike Pelfrey was 9-1 with a 2.39 ERA on June 16 and in the discussion for a spot on the All-Star team? Sure seems like a long time ago as Pelfrey has fallen apart. He has just win since then and has allowed 37 earned runs in nine starts.
Pelfrey has failed to pitch six innings in seven straight starts. He hasn't won since beating the Twins on June 25. Pelfrey is 10-6 with a 4.16 ERA.
Pelfrey has the arduous task of facing the Rockies' Ubaldo Jimenez, who leads the majors in wins, tonight at Citi Field. Jimenez had his struggles too over a six-game stretch where he posted a 7.64 ERA, but has pitched seven innings and allowed one earned run in each of his last two starts to improve to 17-2 with a 2.61 ERA.
Oh yeah, Pelfrey also gets to face the sizzling and under the radar Carlos Gonzalez. The outfielder is hitting .500 (24-for-48) with 16 runs, eight home runs, and 15 RBIs over his last 11 games.
