Pregame notes: Paulino on DL, Beltran, Bay and Izzy

- Despite Carlos Beltran’s two home runs Saturday, manager Terry Collins still chose to sit him for today’s series finale against the Nationals. Collins said he checked with Beltran, who wanted to stick with the plan of two games on, one off for the early part of the season. Collins hopes that once the weather warms up, Beltran will need fewer breaks, and maybe even as soon as next weekend’s series in Atlanta.

-GM Sandy Alderson announced before today’s game that Ronny Paulino has been placed on the disabled list with anemia. Paulino finished the eight games left on his 50-game PED suspension Saturday, but the DL stint cannot be backdated, so the clock did not begin until Sunday. Alderson expects Paulino to play three or four games of extended spring in Port St. Lucie before beginning his rehab assignment at Triple-A Buffalo. Alderson is hopeful he can return on April 25, the first day he is eligible.

-Jason Bay, who is on the DL with a left rib-cage strain, was expected to take batting practice Sunday in Port St. Lucie, but Alderson had no timetable for his return.

-With the excessive workload for the bullpen lately, Alderson suggested that Jason Isringhausen could be called up from Port St. Lucie, especially if the Mets decide to go with 13 relievers at they wait for Bay to be ready. Isringhausen agreed to pitch in expected spring for roughly two weeks in the chance that he would be needed, but ultimately could leave if that time expires without him getting a shot with the Mets.
