Three filmmakers are attempting to draw the curtains on the vast but veiled Dominican Republic baseball pipeline.
"Ballplayer: Pelotero," a documentary from Ross Finkel, Trevor Martin and Jonathan Paley, gives a "never before seen look inside the world of MLB training camps in the Dominican Republic," according to a press release. The film follows two 16-year-old Dominican baseball prospects, Miguel Angel and Jean Carlos, as they look to sign with a major league team.
According to a director's statement from Finkel, Martin and Paley, "Ballplayer: Pelotero" is a "story about two gifted young men with a shared dream, doing their best to navigate a mercenary world with the hopes, fears and burdens of their entire families riding on their success or failure."
The film is narrated by John Leguziamo, a comedian-actor who voiced Sid in "Ice Age." Bobby Valentine is also listed as an executive producer. It was an official selection of several film festivals, including the Hamptons International Film Festival and the Portland International Film Festival.
"Ballplayer: Pelotero" is available on July 13 on iTunes, on video on demand and in theaters, according to Strand Releasing.
