SEATTLE -- Joe Girardi said his plan is to put Alex Rodriguez back into the lineup Friday, provided the third baseman gets through a pregame batting practice session OK.
A-Rod, who has not played since last Friday's game in Anaheim because of nagging pain in his sprained left thumb, hopes that is the result but didn't sound as optimistic as his manager.
"I haven't touched a bat in five days," Rodriguez said Wednesday. "Maybe he has more confidence than me."
Rodriguez repeated what he said over the weekend in Anaheim -- that one way or the other, he'll probably have to deal with some degree of pain in his thumb the rest of the season.
"It's not going to feel 100 percent," he said. "You have to play through it."
But that shouldn't impact his production, as long as he doesn't push things now. "This time of year, there's not one guy in this clubhouse that is not playing with bumps and bruises," A-Rod said. "And that's what I want to upgrade to."
