Burnett needs august outing

He's not quite the Yanks' version of Oliver Perez, but A.J. Burnett does make the fans cringe.  He is 9-11 with a 4.80 earned run average entering tonight's start in Chicago against the White Sox.  He is 0-for- August.

Burnett is in the second year of a a five-year contract worth $82.5 million. He was 18-10 in 2008 and was the second best pitcher on theToronto staff behind Roy Halladay.  Burnett  was 13-9 for the Yankees in 2009 and won a game in the World Series.

Burnett becomes pivotal on this team if injured Andy Pettitte cannot be counted on for post season. CC Sabathia and Phil Hughes are the only effective veteran starters at the moment.  No matter what rookie Ivan Nova does, he wouldn't figure to start over Burnett in a playoff game. Javier Vazquez is in the bullpen for the time being.

Here's a month-by-month look at Burnett:

             W-L         ERA

April      3-0           2.43

May        3-2          4.03

June      0-5         11.35

July        3-1           2.00

August   0-3           6.08

Totals    9-11         4.08
