Francisco Cervelli was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital for what the team called a precautionary CT scan after suffering a concussion from a beaning by Zech Zinicola in the third inning.

Nothing further is known, though Joe Girardi may have a bit more info after the game.

It was another bad George M. Steinbrenner Field moment for Cervelli who, nearly two years ago (on March 8), had his right wrist broken by Elliot Johnson of the Rays in a ninth-inning collision at the plate.

Zinicola, according to, told reporters it was a fastball that got away and that he felt bad about hitting Cervelli.

UPDATE: Cervelli, in the clubhouse when the media went down there in the seventh inning, said all the tests were negative.

“Everything’s all right, thank God,” said Cervelli, who turned 24 Saturday. “Just a matter of a couple days.”

Cervelli was scheduled to take the two-plus hour bus trip to Fort Myers for Sunday’s game against the Twins but Mike Rivera will now make the trip.
