Curtis Granderson out a month, says Girardi; A-Rod resting today

Joe Girardi said Curtis Granderson's grade 2 groin strain will keep the center fielder out a month.

"This could take some time," Girardi said this morning.

Granderson was hurt  running the bases in Saturday's 7-6 loss.

Girardi wouldn't speculate on any roster moves, saying that, for now, Brett Gardner is in center and the platoon of Randy Winn and Marcus Thames will be in left. Thames gets the start today against White Sox lefthander Mark Buerhle.

Mark Melancon got the call from Triple-A Scranton to give a worn-out bullpen an extra arm for today, but Greg Golson may get the call from the minors for outfield depth soon.

Alex Rodriguez is also out today, but that is for rest, according to Girardi, not injury or the further insult of A-Rod's 3-for-28 stretch, though Rodriguez has had three hits and two RBI in last two games.

"He just needs a day," Girardi said of A-Rod. Also needing a day is Mark Teixeira, but he'll be the designated hitter today.

The lineup:

Jeter -- SS

Johnson -- 1B

Teixeira -- DH

Swisher -- RF

Cano -- 2B

Posada -- C

Thames -- LF

Gardner -- CF

Pena -- 3B
