Dellin Betances, the Yankees' eighth-round pick in the 2006 draft out of Grand Street Campus High School in Brooklyn, is off to a good start this season after a disappointing 2009, but for the hard-throwing 6-8, 215-pound righthander, most of his early professional career has been a battle to stay healthy.
Last season he went 2-5 with a 5.48 ERA in 11 starts with Class A Tampa before landing on the disabled list June 26 with an elbow injury that cost him the rest of the season. Betances also missed time in 2007 and 2008 with shoulder and elbow trouble.
Betances, 22, who has a mid-to-high-90s fastball, is 2-0 with a 0.50 ERA in three starts for Tampa. He's struck out 21 in 18 innings.
