It’s official: Jesus Montero will play in the postseason.
Joe Girardi -- known for being tight-lipped about his postseason preferences – let the roster news slip before Game 1 of Sunday’s doubleheader.
“I can’t envision a scenario where he won’t be on our postseason roster,” the manager said, before backtracking just a bit. “But those are things that we need to continue to talk about.”
It took Montero, 21, just two weeks to earn a spot on the playoff roster. And he made it look easy. He went 3-for-4 and collected a career-high four RBI Saturday to up his batting average to .346 coming into yesterday’s split doubleheader.
Though told of Girardi’s admission by reporters, Montero seemed reluctant to believe it.
“I’m just going to do my best,” he said, when asked if he thought he’d proven himself enough to play in the postseason. “And try to help and do whatever they want me to do and help the team to win.”
