Brian Gordon will start in place of the injured Bartolo Colon in Thrusday’s series finale against Texas, Joe Girardi announced after Wednesday night’s game.
The manager refused to name a starter earlier in the day, saying only that it would either be Hector Noesi or Gordon, whom he said would be put on the roster Thursday. But the manager tipped his hand in the fifth inning when Noesi began warming in the bullpen.
Gordon, a 32-year-old father of three, was released from the Phillies organization Tuesday. He went 5-0 with a 1.23 ERA in nine starts with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, striking out 53 and walking five in 51 1 1/3 innings. His ERA of 1.14 was the best in the International League.
