You don't hear the phrase often -- never, really -- in May when it comes to baseball.
But the Yankees felt Tuesday night's game in St. Petersburg was absolutely one they had to have.
“It just like we needed to win this game,” Joe Girardi said after the Yankees' 6-2 victory. “This was, I don’t want to say must-win, but as close as you can get to a must-win in the month of May.”
Alex Rodriguez, who hit two home runs he hopes breaks him out of a slump that dates back to the third week of April, used the word "desperation."
“We definitely needed a win," he said. "We haven’t been playing well and it’s not acceptable.”
Girardi used Joba Chamberlain three straight days, something he rarely does with a reliever. He did with Chamberlain Tuesday for two reasons -- the right-hander hadn't thrown a ton of pitches his previous two outings and his team, you might have heard, really, really needed a victory.
"I felt that I had to do it tonight," Girardi said.
