No one was blaming Derek Jeter for Friday night's loss but the shortstop took his fifth-inning error, which led to a run that tied it a 1-1, hard.
"It's not a difficult play," Jeter said.
Vernon Wells grounded out to start the fifth and Peter Bourjos reached with a bunt single. Catcher Jeff Mathis followed with a grounder to short where Jeter fielded the ball cleanly, but his throw sailed high, pulling Mark Teixeira off the bag. Jeter’s 10th error of the season put runners at first and second. Howie Kendrick's opposite-field single down the rightfield line later in the inning brought in Bourjos to make it 1-1.
“I gave them an extra out throwing that ball away,” Jeter said. “It’s a situation where I threw the ball high and it cost us a run.”
Asked how impressed he was with Colon, Jeter, umprompted, brought up the play again.
"He was outstanding," Jeter said of Colon, who allowed just that unearned run in seven innings. "If I don't throw that ball away it's a different game. He really didn't get into any trouble until I put him there."
