Live Blog: Angels steamroll Yankees 10-2

SCORE: ANGELS 10, YANKEES 2

WP: Sean O'Sullivan

LP: Phil Hughes

Top 9th: It was another inning of poor relief pitching. Chad Gaudin relieved Park and gave up another two runs on a Napoli 2-run single, making it 4 runs batted in for him tonight. It's been a Jekyll and Hyde past few games for the bullpen. Saturday the bullpen surrendered six earned runs on Saturday against the Rays and then two earned runs on Sunday in the finale against the Rays. Tonight's four run performance was a return to the worst.

SCORE: Yankees 2, Angels 10

Bottom 8th: It looks like the Angels have a new K-Rod. Francisco Rodriguez (a different one from the Mets' Francisco Rodriguez) came in to relieve Shields. Rodriguez induced a ground out from Jeter and struck out Swisher on a heater for the first two outs. The Yankees looked like they were about to cash in on a two-out rally after a walk to Teixeira and a single in the right-center gap by Arod that put runners on the corners. But Cano lined out to left to end the inning.

SCORE: Yankees 2, Angels 8

Top 8th: As displayed tonight, Park has had a mixed season out of the pen. After a poor 7th inning, he had a 1-2-3 inning in the 8th. He has held the opposition scoreless in 10 of his last 15 appearances. The problem with those five appearances where he did give up runs, those runs extended the opposing team's lead and dwindled chances for a Yankees comeback.

SCORE: Yankees 2, Angels 8

Bottom 7th: In 35 lifetime appearances versus the Yankees, Scot Shields came into the game with a 3.00 ERA. He lowered that number tonight when he came in to relieve O'Sullivan. He struck out Cano on a high-and-outside heater, walked Posada, struck out Granderson and got Gardner to ground out to first. O'Sullivan's final line: 6 IP, 2 hits, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 1 HR. He held the Yankees hitless after the first inning.

SCORE: Yankees 2, Angels 8

Top 7th: In an attempt to redeem himself and even the score with Posada, Abreau dashed for second on a steal, but, once again, Posada nabbed him. Albaladejo pitched all right in his first relief appearance since replacing the injured Pettitte on the roster. He got Kendrick to ground out to short, but walked Hunter after Abreau was caught stealing. Chan Ho Park relieved Albaladejo and did not help the Yankees, immediately giving up a two-run home run to Matsui. It's Godzilla's second homer against his former team this year. Park struck out Napoli to end the inning and headed back to the dugout with his head hung.

Fast Fact: Albaladejo had 31 saves and a 0.96 ERA s the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre closer. Since June 25 he’s pitched 11 times, allowing no runs, no walks, six hits and 16 strikeouts.

SCORE: Yankees 2, Angels 8

Bottom 6th: Girardi was tossed from the game after arguing for close to three minutes with first base umpire Paul Emmel on a close play where Aybar threw out Teixeira for the second out of the inning. Girardi cursed and got up in the faces of Emmel and home plate umpire Bruce Dreckman. After returning to the dugout he gathered some hitting charts, removed a wad of gum from his mouth and tossed it on to the field in disgust. Girardi's ejection overshadowed O'Sullivan's performance: He has not given up a hit since the first inning. The Yankees are notorious for hitting poorly against pitcher's they've never faced before and such is the case tonight. He got ground outs from Swisher and Teixeira and a fly out from Arod. Scott Shields, an old nemesis, is warming up.

SCORE: Yankees 2, Angels 6

Top 6th: After walked Mastui and then serving up a two-run homer to Napoli that put the Angels up 6-2, Hughes was taken out. The Angels were hitting Hughes all night, even getting out on hard-hit balls. Hughes' final line: 5 IP, 9 hits, 6 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 2 HR. Jonathan Albaladejo relieved Hughes. He gave up a single to Rivera, but then mowed down Izturis on a changeup, induced a ground out to short by Mathis and got Aybar to hit a dribbler to him for the final out.

SCORE: Yankees 2, Angels 6

Bottom 5th: Another fruitless inning for the Yankees. Hitters worked O'Sullivan more this inning, but Miranda flew out and after Gardner walked, Jeter hit into a double play.

SCORE: Yankees 2, Angels 4

Top 5th: Hughes caught a minor break this inning. Kendrick popped up, but Hughes walked Abreau. Abreau was caught stealing easily. Mike Scioscia must have expected Hughes to throw a breaking ball and thus sent Abreau. With chances of a rally squashed, Hunter - who has been red-hot and a Yankee killer - lined out to right.

SCORE: Yankees 2, Angels 4

Bottom 4th: Yankees struggles against O'Sullivan continue. He had another efficient inning, throwing 13 pitches. Cano lined out on the first pitch, Posada struck out on a changeup that has baffled hitters all night and Granderson lined out to left.

SCORE: Yankees 2, Angels 4

Top 4th: Napoli grounded out, Rivera singled and then Izturis sent one into the right -field seats for a two-run homer. The Angels have had Hughes number all night. Mathis struck out and Aybar flew out to deep center.

SCORE: Yankees 2, Angels 4

Bottom 3rd: O'Sullivan doesn't have overpowering stuff, but he's painting the corners with his fastball and changeup. He put down Swisher, Tex and Arod on 10 pitches. Napoli made a diving play to his right, spun around and raced to first to beat Arod to the bag. Not bad for a guy who is normally a catcher.

SCORE: Yankees 2, Angels 2

Top 3rd: The Angels continue to rake tonight. Aybar led off the inning with a ground-rule double and scored the tying run on a single up the middle by Hunter, his second hit of the night. With runners at the corners, one out and Matsui at-bat, Hughes turned a double-play to end the inning.

SCORE: Yankees 2, Angels 2

Bottom 2nd: O'Sullivan bounced back this inning, sending the Yankees down in order on 12 pitches. Miranda grounded out at first, Gardner struck out looking on a changeup and Jeter struck out swinging at a changeup.

SCORE: Yankees 2, Angels 1

Top 2nd: The Angels hit the ball well this inning, scoring a run, and they would have scored more were it not for a baserunning blunder. Hunter roped a hit through the hole between short and third to lead off the inning. Not surprisingly, the crowd gave Matsui a long applause when he strolled to the plate after Hunter. Hunter took off for second on a hit-and-run, but when Matsui popped up to Cano in shallow center, Hunter misjudged the fly and was nailed out at first by Cano on a double play. Hunter stopped and stared at the ball in mid-flight a few feet from second base, but he did not turn around until just before Cano caught the ball, leaving plenty of time for Cano to make an accurate throw. The Angels then strung together three consecutive hits by Napoli, Rivera and Izturis, with Izturis driving home Napoli. Davie Eiland came out to the mound after Hughes surrendered the third consecutive hit. Hughes then struck out Mathis on a check swing to end the inning.

SCORE: Yankees 2, Angels 1

Bottom 1st: Jeter grounded out to begin the game, but Swisher sent a sharp liner over the right-field wall, his 17th homer of the year, to give the Yanks an early lead. Thanks to Swisher's bomb, the Yankees scored first in a game for the first time since facing the Mariners before the All-Star break. After a walk to Teixeira, Arod pulled his hands in and drove a curveball into the gap in right-center for a double. Cano was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out. Teixeira scored on the Posada fielder's choice, where Cano was nabbed at second and runners were left on first and second. Granderson struck out on a changeup to end the inning and strand runners at the corners.

Fast fact: The Yankees scored two runs this inning. Phil Hughes has received an average support of 8.29 runs per 9.0 IP this season, the highest such mark in the majors.

SCORE: Yankees 2, Angels 0

Top 1st: It was a quick and clean inning for Hughes, who put the Angels down in order. He threw 13 pitches, all fastballs. He was able to keep his secondary pitches in his back pocket for the next time he faces the top of the order.
