Live Blog: Yankees at Rays

Will it finally happen? Will Alex Rodriguez end the drama and finally hit career homer No. 600? A-Rod hasn't homered the last seven games as the Yankees take on second-place Tampa Bay, which has won six consecutive games and are two games behind the Yankees for first place. The Yankees have won 17 of 22.

Wade Davis will pitch for the Rays and A-Rod is 4-for-8 with two home runs against him. Davis was on the precipice of possibly losing his rotation spot with prospect Jeremy Hellickson tearing up the minors, but Davis has a 2.11 in winning his last three starts. Davis is 8-9 with a 4.32 ERA. He has made two starts against the Yankees this season and is 1-1 with a 4.63 ERA.

B.J. Upton returns to the lineup for the Rays after missing two games with a sprained left ankle. Ben Zobrist is out again with back stiffness and could miss the entire series.

Jorge Posada is back in the lineup and will catch Phil Hughes (12-3, 4.04 ERA). Hughes hasn't faced the Rays this season. The Yankees are 4-4 against the Rays this season.

And of course, the Yankees are on the verge of acquring Lance Berkman.

Losing pitcher: Phil Hughes (12-4)

Save: Rafael Soriano (No. 29)

Home runs: NYY: Swisher (19); TB: Joyce (4).

Top 9: Rafael Soriano in for the save. He has 28 saves. A-Rod leads off and is 0-for-3. Make it 0-for-4 as he fouls out to Pena. Cano pops up to second base. Pena makes a terrific play to by diving to knock down a Posada grounder and throws to Soriano covering first to get Posada. His glove just touched the ball and it bounced to him as he was on the ground.

Bottom 8: Jaso grounds out to Cano for the first out. Crawford pops up to third base. Longoria strikes out and Chamberlain retires all six batters he faced.

Top 8: Joaquin Benoit now pitching. He has a sick 51/6 K/BB ratio in 35 1/3 innings. He has allowed just 14 hits. Jeter grounds out to Bartlett for the first out. Swisher fouls out to Longoria as the ball just avoids the stands. Teixeira flies to center for a 1-2-3 inning. A-Rod will lead off the ninth, likely against Rafael Soriano.

Rays 3, Yankees 2

Bottom 7: Chamberlain now on the mound. Hughes goes six innings and allows four hits, three runs, two walks, and strikes out six. Upton strikes out swinging as does Brignac. Bartlett grounds out to Jeter for a 1-2-3 inning.

Rays 3, Yankees 2

Top 7: Granderson strikes out swinging on a full count to lead off. Dan Wheeler and Randy Choate are up in the bullpen for the Rays. Davis is at 101 pitches. Joba Chamberlain warming up in the pen for the Yankees. Curtis gets ahead 3-and-1 but pops up to Bartlett in shallow center. Gardner flies out to left to end the inning and Davis should be done at 114 pitches.

Rays 3, Yankees 2

Bottom 6: Jaso singles to center to start the inning. Crawford flies to right and Hughes is up to 85 pitches. Jaso goes to second on a wild pitch and Longoria walks as Hughes is struggling to throw strikes. Pena grounds into a 4-6 fielder's choice putting runners at first and third. Joyce blasts a 2-and-2 fastball over the rightfield wall for a three-run shot. You could see Hughes really struggling since the fifth. Rays takes a 3-2 lead. Hughes at 98 pitches now. Hughes falls behind Aybar 3-and-1 before getting Aybar looking on a curve.

Rays 3, Yankees 2

Top 6: Teixeira walks and here comes A-Rod, who fouls out to first base. The frustration continues. Cano follows with a single. Posada hits into a 3-6-3 double play to end the inning.

Yankees 2, Rays 0

Bottom 5: Aybar leads off with a single to right; just the second hit of the game for the Rays. Upton pops up to first base and Hughes is at just 61 pitches. Joyce had the count at 3-and-0, it went full and he fouled off several pitches before striking out looking on a pitch on the inside corner. Bartlett flies out, but Hughes had to work very hard that inning.

Yankees 2, Rays 0

Top 5: Curtis pops up to short for the first out. Gardner works the count full before drawing a walk. Jeter pops up to right. Gardner steals second base and does a good job hanging on to the bag. Swisher strikes out swinging to end the inning.

Yankees 2, Rays 0

Bottom 4: Longoria flies to center on the first pitch. The Rays have been very aggressive. At least Pena worked the count full before grounding to first base. Then Joyce grounds out on the first pitch to first base. The Rays making it easy for Hughes.

Yankees 2, Rays 0

Top 4: Cano flies to right to start the inning. Posada fouls out to third base. Granderson grounds to third and Davis has settled down after a shaky first inning.

Yankees 2, Rays 0

Bottom 3: Bartlett flies out for the first out. Jaso flies out to deep rightfield. Looked real good off the bat. Crawford strikes out swinging to end an easy inning for Hughes, who has looked very sharp so far. He has four Ks.

Yankees 2, Rays 0

Top 3: Swisher strikes out swining on a full count. Teixeira pops up to left on the first pitch for the second out. Here comes A-Rod for another crack at 600. Will I be writing this in September? It's now 32 at-bats without a home run after A-Rod flies to right.

Yankees 2, Rays 0

Bottom 2: Joyce fouls out to Posada. Aybar strikes out swinging for out No. 2. Upton draws a walk. Upton takes off for second immediately and swipes the bag easily. Brinac strikes out swinging. Hughes has a very good fastball tonight.

Yankees 2, Rays 0

Top 2: Granderson flies out to left for out No. 1. Curtis pops up to Brignac in shallow center. Gardner walks as Davis is up to 37 pitches. Jeter grounds out to second on the first pitch.

Yankees 2, Rays 0

Bottom 1: Impressive stat: Phil Hughes hasn't allowed a home run on the road. Jaso grounds out to second on a 3-and-1 pitch. Have to take the pitch being the first batter of the game. Make the pitcher work. I guess Crawford wasn't listening as he pops up to leftfield on the first pitch. Longoria gets the first hit for the Rays with a single to rightfield. Pena strikes out swinging to end the inning.

Yankees 2, Rays 0

Top 1:  Jeter leads off by reaching for an outside 1-and-2 pitch and dumps into shallow center for a single. Swisher connects on the first pitch for a home run to rightfield. It is home run No. 19 and there was no doubt it was gone off the crack of the bat. Could Swisher get to 600 before A-Rod? Teixeira strikes out for the first out. The drought continues. A-Rod strikes out swinging on a full count. Cano keeps the inning going with a single up the middle. Posada gets called out on a check swing, so Davis gets three strikeouts in the inning, but also allows three hits, including the home run.
