The Yankees aim to win the series by taking three of four against the Red Sox in the Bronx this afternoon. Jon Lester takes the mound for the Red Sox and has lost four consecutive games for the first time in his career. Lester has a 4.39 ERA in the four games.He left his last start with a cramp in his hamstring. The lefthander is 11-7 with a 3.07 ERA and a 154/52 K/BB ratio in 146 2/3 innings. Lester is 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA in two starts against the Yankees this season. Jacoby Ellsbury is 0-for-16 since coming off the disabled list and will hit ninth.

Phil Hughes will start for the Yankees. Hughes hasn't pitched more than six innings in his last four starts. He won his last start, allowing one earned run in 5 1/3 innings against the Blue Jays. Hughes is 13-4 with a 3.96 ERA and a 107/36 K/BB ratio in 122 2/3 innings. Jorge Posada will catch for the third consecutive game and Brett Gardner gets the day off.

Red Sox win, 2-1, to earn a split of the four-game series. Lester gets the win and Papelbon notches the save. Hughes takes the loss.

Bottom 9: Granderson strikes out swinging. Jeter draws a walk and steals second base. Swisher strikes out swinging on three pitches. Teixeira strikes out swinging and Papelbon gets a four-out save.

Top 9: Gardner stays in the game in left and Pena takes over at third. Kalish lines to short. Hall strikes out swinging. Ellsbury walks and steals his fourth base of the game. Scutaro groinds out to first.

Bottom 8: Teixeira hits a shot into rightfield for a solo homer. That's hit 26th homer and the Yankees finally score. He has three homers in 11 career at-bats against Bard. A-Rod singles and Gardner pinch runs for him. Gardner runs and that prevents a double play as Cano grounds to second. Posada walks on four pitches. Berkman pinch hits for Thames and he pops up to left. Papelbon relieves Bard. Kearns grounds to second on the first pitch and the two new Yankees fail in a big spot.

Top 8: Boone Logan now on the mound. Ortiz flies out to deep right-center. Granderson catches it on the track. Joba Chamberlain now pitching. Beltre grounds out to Jeter. Lowell pops up on the first pitch.

Bottom 7: Posada singles to left. Thames doubles off the top of the right-center field wall. Just missed going over. Kearns gets hit by a pitch on a 1-and-2 count to load the bases. Granderson strikes out swinging for the first out. Lester, at 99 pitches, is coming out of the game. Daniel Bard is in. Jeter strikes out swinging at high heat for the second out. Swisher strikes out swinging. A terrific job by Bard, who will be closing for the Red Sox in the future.

Top 7: Wood relieves Hughes. Hall flies to center and Ellsbury gets hit by a pitch. Ellsbury steals second base. Kearns takes a bad route, but winds up making a sliding catch to retire Scutaro. Drew walks on four pitches and this is a typical Wood inning. A double steal puts runners at second and third. Martinez strikes out swinging.

Bottom 6: Teixeira grounds to short. Lester is at 81 pitches. A-Rod grounds to Scutaro on the first pitch. Cano grounds out it short and a real quick 1-2-3 inning for Lester.

Top 2: Lowell gets robbed on a terrific sliding catch by Swisher and Kalish singles to rightfield. Kalish steals second base and Posada's throw is to the rightfield side of the bag and sails into centerfield. Kalish advances to third base. Hall reaches on an infield single deep in the hole. Jeter gets to it, but has no play and Kalish scores. Ellsbury lines a single to center and it's his first hit since coming off the DL snapping a 0-for-16 skid. Hall goes to third base. Hughes now at 39 pitches. Ellsbury steals second. Scutaro works a walk after falling behind 1-and-2 to load the bases. Hughes now at 47 pitches. Drew grounds out to Cano scoring Hall for a 2-0 lead. Martinez grounds out to Jeter to end the inning.

Martinez flied to right. Ortiz singled to leftfield. Here comes Beltre, who has done a terrific job, especially with all the injuries to the offense. Playing his home games in Safeco Park with the Mariners really brought down his numbers. Beltre struck out swinging on a 1-and-2 pitch.
