Mariano Rivera revealed yesterday that he would be voluntarily missing the All-Star Game
because of two injuries:
(1) his left side - bothering him since early May
(2) his right knee - bothering him since the Dodgers series
How's he been performing?
He actually had his worst month of the year in May, going 0-1 with a 3.68 ERA and three saves
in four chances. But he still allowed just five hits and two walks in 7 1/3 innings.Perhaps
most telling was that he struck out just four.
But in June, Rivera was as dominant as ever. He went 2-0 with seven saves in seven chances and
a 0.00 ERA. In 13 innings, he allowed four hits and two walks. From June 3-June 20 he went
seven consecutive innings without allowing a hit. From June 6-June 20 he went six consecutive
innings without allowing a hit or a walk. In 13 innings he fanned 16.
June, of course, includes that Dodgers series - in which he was 1-0 in three innings (two
games), allowing a hit and striking out six.
July has been much of the same so far: four innings, four hits, no walks, three strikeouts.
His 2.25 ERA and three of those hits date solely from that blown save in Toronto on July 4th.
This leads me to two conclusions:
(1) If Rivera's sore, taking the All-Star game off is a prudent idea.
(2) If Rivera's injured, I would like to be the first to ask for this injury as well.
